He will also be looking after everything and ensuring the smooth running of the Conference.

Introduction and the Year in Review - Tessa Shepperson
Tessa Shepperson (aka Mrs Gee) is a director of Easy Law Training and also the creator and owner of the Landlord Law online information service (for which the Conference is named).
In this talk she will be looking back over the past year and highlighting some of the more important developments - concentrating on those which are not being covered by other speakers.
Here is a clip from an interview Tessa did just after the Cardiff Conference in May 2015 where she talks about Easy Law Training and the Landlord Law Conferences:
10.15 am
Update on Right to Rent law and practice - Sue Lukes
Sue Lukes is a well-known specialist in migration, equalities and service provision especially local services, advice and community development, utilising the knowledge and contacts gained through careers in refugee resettlement, housing aid and freelancing (since 1996). She is the author of many academic and more practical publications in these fields.
Here is a clip for you of Sue's talk at our Cambridge Conference in 2015 where she talks about the Immigration Act 2014. In her talk at the 2016 conference she will be updating us on the law and telling us about the new regulations which will no doubt have come into force at that time - or which are to come!
10.45 am
Section 21 Notices - David Smith
David Smith is a key and very popular speaker at our Conferences.
A solicitor and a partner in Legal 500 firm Anthony Gold. David is also the Policy Director of the Residential Landlords Association (also one of the Conference Exhibitors) and a published author.
In the short video below David talks to Graeme Gee about the Landlord Law Conference and describes the two talks he will be delivering to us on the day.
11.15 am
Comfort break / networking
After three high powered and detailed talks, you will be ready for a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit!
The first break is quite a long one, to give you time to take a look at our fabulous exhibitors! You will find these mostly in the Exhibitors Hall although there may be a few in the lobby area.
All of them will be only too delighted to talk to you and maybe give you a bit of advice if you need it. So if you are worried about a tenancy deposit issue, thinking of setting up as an agent and want to talk to ARLA or are interested in the service offered by the Property Redress Scheme, now is your chance.
You may also be able to catch up with some of our speakers - for example David Smith will probably be found at the Anthony Gold stand.
Just make sure you are back in the main conference hall for the start of the next talk!
12.00 pm
Landlords Repairing Obligations - Peter Marcus
Our speaker for this talk is Peter Marcus, a specialist housing barrister from Zenith Chambers in Leeds.
Peter came to the Bar following a career in campaigning and public housing, having worked in Manchester’s Hulme Redevelopment, for Camden LBC and for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
He loves training and has his own style - humorous with lots of annecdotes but packed full of detailed legal knowledge. Delegates on his courses are always very engaged and enjoy the day.
His topic today, landlords repairing obligations, is a huge and quite complicated subject. Peter will be discussing the landlords' repairing obligations under the Landlord & Tenant Act 1985 as well as looking at some of the more recent, and quite surprising, developments in this area of law.
This is an important talk for all landlords and all agents.
12.30 pm
The Housing Health and Safety Rating System - Giles Peaker
Giles Peaker is a solicitor and partner at Anthony Gold solicitors and specialises in housing law. He was joint finalist for Young Legal Aid Lawyer of the year in 2010, is editor of the highly regarded Nearly Legal Housing Law update site and appears frequently in national press, TV and radio.
Today he will be talking about the Housing Health and Safety Rating System - this is the standard Local Authority Environmental Health Officers use when they are inspecting a rented property to see if it complies with health and safety standards. This is particularly important now, as a notice served after one of these inspections can prevent a landlord from serving a section 21 notice for a six month period.
See below where Giles is interviewed by Tessa about the Nearly Legal Blog:
01.00 pm
Lunch
Lunch will be served in the lobby area outside the conference and exhibitors hall.
Special diet requirements are no problem to the Hilton Hotel chefs so please when booking let us know if you have any special diet requirements and we will make sure that you are catered for.
We allow an hour for lunch, so this will give you plenty of time to have another look around the Exhibitors hall, and perhaps more importantly, network with other delegates.
We are often told that by delegates how much they enjoy meeting other people in the same line of business.
Being a landlord or letting agent can sometimes be a bit lonely if you work on your own and the Landlord Law Conference is a great opportunity to talk to others and maybe find that they have the same problems and concerns that you have. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved!
It is also a time for determined smokers to congregate outside and for everyone to re-charge their batteries before the afternoon sessions.
02.00 pm
Tenancy Deposit Adjudications - John King
John King
John is the Deputy Director of Customer Relations at the Tenancy Deposit Scheme and is a former practitioner in the lettings industry with over 25 years’ experience. He has a keen understanding of the Private Rental Sector, and in addition to his work in Estate Agency John has worked within tenancy deposit protection since 2009 moving from a key role in the adjudication team.
John has presented many training seminars, forums and industry events and delivers the successful TDS Academy throughout England and Wales.
About TDS
"TDS is the leading authority on tenancy deposit protection. We operate the Tenancy Deposit Scheme which operates the largest insurance based scheme in England and Wales and a new custodial scheme from 1 April 2016. TDS also provides key services to SafeDeposits Scotland, a custodial scheme and operates TDS Northern Ireland which offers both types of scheme – all done on a not-for-profit basis."
TDS are the Landlord Law Conference main sponsors and John can be found, during the breaks, at the TDS Exhibitors Stand.
02.30 pm
Update on HMO law and practice - David Smith
David Smith in this second talk will be talking about a very complicated topic which he knows very well - Houses in Multiple Occupation or HMOs.
David wrote one of the original books on the topic and much of his 'day job' consists of acting for landlords who are being prosecuted by local authorities under the HMO regulations - and frequently getting them off.
David has done a talk on HMOs at most of our Conferences. We have asked him to concentrate on licensing this time, but he will also give you an overview of the law and bring you up to date with any new developments.
You can see him speaking at our 2013 conference in the clip below:
03.00 pm
Comfort break / networking
We have asked the Hilton to serve cake at the afternoon break so that is something to look forward to!
This is your final chance to visit our fabulous exhibitors and get their advice. As they will no doubt be taking down their stand after this.
But the day is by no means over as you still have three great talks to look forward to!
03.30 pm
Fire Safety - Warren Spencer
Warren Spencer is a solicitor and real expert on fire safety law - a very important topic, not least because the courts are imposing increasingly harsh sentences on landlords who fail to comply with the fire safety regulations.
As well as being a solicitor at Blackhurst Budd solicitors, Warren also runs a separate business called Firexact which provide fire safety advice and services for landlords. You will be able to speak to him and his colleague during the breaks as they will have a stand in the exhibition hall.
Below is a short clip from Warren's talk from our Cambridge Conference in 2015:
04.00 pm

In this talk he will be discussing what you need to do to prepare for your eviction hearing so as to avoid the major pitfalls that can await you at court.
See below a clip from the talk Martyn did at our 2014 Conference:
04.30 pm
Dealing with Death - Sam Madge-Wyld
Sam Madge Wyld is a barrister from Arden Chambers in London and for the last talk in the conference is going to be talking about something which puzzles a lot of landlords and tenants, and even letting agents.
What is the legal situation if the landlord or the tenant dies? Does the tenancy end or does it carry on? And if so - how do you stop it? What are the rules?
Sam has also promised to spend a bit of time talking about assignment of tenancies as this is also a somewhat misunderstood area of law.
Here is a short interview with Sam where he explains the things he is going to be discussing
The Conference will end at 5.00 pm.
